Question:
Does anyone out there in the great abyss have a good source
(wholesale or otherwise) for African glass beads? I am also interested
in learning about the history of making these beads.
Answer:
Since I haven't gotten into buying these beads (yet!) I can't tell you
where the best sources are, but I do know of one source. John Paulus
of Africa John's does sales in African beads. Address is P.O. Box 565,
Blodgett, OR 97326. Phone is (503) 456-2012. I don't know what he does
for mail order, but if he does not accomodate it, he may be able to direct
you to other sources. I've only seen him at bead bazaars.
The best historical reference on beads, from all origins, I have found to
be "History of Beads" by Lois Sherr Dubin (Abrams, 1987, $65.00). (It's
wonderful; I got it for Christmas!) If you do not wish to buy a book this
comprehensive, you may want to check it out at your local library to see
the reference sources listed in the book, which may lead you to another
book more specific to African bead history.
