Question:
Do you think a 5 mm sized bead cap would look fine on a 8 mm bead? I
know the general rule is the bead should be 2 mm larger than the cap.
Answer:
-It depends on the shape of the beadcap and whether you want it to
"swallow" the bead, or just decorate the ends.
- I hate to sound like a smart-ass, but about the only way to know if you
are going to like it or not is to try and see what it looks like.
-My reason for posting this was to hopefully hear from someone who used
a 5 mm bead cap on a 8 mm bead (or had a similar experience with bead
caps). I just wondered if the 5mm would be too small to make a
difference. I know I can go to a bead shop, etc. I was just wanting
to hear from someone else who had a similar experience. Apparently,
that is not going to happen so I will move on to other alternatives.
-I was shopping for beadcaps yesterday, online. Antique gold pewter, or aged
brass. I'm having a gold fetish right now.
They come in oval, which fits one way on the bead. Round, which obviously fits
well, unless you are capping a not-round bead. I just bought square brass bead
caps, and I won't really know how they fit or look until I try it. Sometimes
the top part of the cap doesn't go all the way down over the bead, and I don't
really like that look because, to me, it looks like it doesn't fit. I have
also used larger bead caps with a smaller bead, and smaller bead caps with a
larger bead to change the look. I also bought square brass bead caps that are
LONG; this will be an interesting fit. I put them, once, over a elongated,
square sided bead (one of those cheap India ones if you know what I am talking
about) and it looked fabulous, but the same cap looks really bad over round.
The example given on one of the sites was a conical-shaped bead cap over a
pinched round, and it didn't fit and looked like hell, so I couldn't imagine
why she did that, LOL. Maybe it was just the right color or something.
So, please don't take offense. I use bead caps on practically everything. I
never measure any of them, or the beads, and so have no concept of what size
they are or how it looks on a specific sized bead. I mess around with them
until something looks right and then I go with it.
