Question:
Lately (about 4 months) I've been having a huge problem with my coolers
running at 70-74% RH. I like for them to run around 62-64%.
I've been using the silica gel with PG and distilled water and all the jars
are producing huge amounts of mold throughout the gel. In the end my
cigars are wet and un-smokable.
Whatever I want to smoke at a later date I have to gather them from the
coolers and put them in one of my desktop's which run perfectly at 64% by
using the Diamond Crown devices. Very nice devices as they only use
distilled water but pricey as it would take three or four per cooler.
Been considering Humidification beads. Rumor is on another board that
Climmax beads (http://www.climmax.com) is not returning emails nor shipping
products but still taking money. Which BTW runs through fujipub's secure
server.
Another board recommended:
http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/Humi%20Front%20Page.htm
I ordered on Friday. Received an email the same day that my order would
ship on Saturday and it arrived today. That's great service !!
I'll report back in a couple of weeks to report my finding on how these
beads work for me. I ordered four tubes and two pounds of beads at 65%.
If this does not work I'll be building a temporary Humi-closet.
I placed the beads in dry.
Answer:
- Not sure if it will impact the smell of your humidor, but you can try to
drop a table spoon of clorox int the jar. That normally takes care of molds
quite nicely.
-You could try setting up a "control jar" of the crystals using 3% white
vinegar added to the distilled water or PG mix; the smell should not be
intrusive at that level of concentration, and should prevent mold. I used
empty containers from Crystal Light tea to hold my crystals and drilled 4
small holes in each lid. My coolerdor is running 67%-69% after initially
using a 50/50 PG/distilled water mix and using straight distilled afterwards
for recharging. By covering a few holes with tape it might get to a lower
level, but I use a small desktop humi with florist foam and 50/50 which
stays at 63%-65% for the "good stuff".
