Question:
I'm trying to find somewhere in the uk (midlands area pref.), where i can
get a load (1000+) of those coloured glass beads (like flat marbles, though
5 KG's of coloured marbles will serve the same purpouse) that people put on
the top of soil in plant pots, tho more usually in glass vases in the house,
i want them to put in a self contained patio fountian, they need to be glass
because i want the lights that are in the bottom to show through the beads,
i've found them in home improvment type shops, they sell one colour at a
time, and you get about 30 for £2.50!!, i don't want to spend £200 for a
decorative effect!
can anyone help?
Answer:
-Try speaking to a florist, they may well have a trade catalogue for just the
thing you seek
-Wow what a cool idea! i work in a glass factory and i've always loved how
all the bits of glass look when a bit of toughened glas shaters! never
figured anyway to be able to use them without it being dangerous! (still
very sharp as i found out when a big peice shattered on me and took a chunk
out of my thumb!) If you do want some look in the yellow pages for toughened
glass suppliers and as they have to break loads of glass to see if its
toughning to uk standards i bet theyll just give you how much youll need!
-Just a word of caution though - if the glass remains are sharp at all, I
wouldn't use them with water, since they're liable to 'disappear' in the
water (optically) - and might turn a potentially hazardous feature (water)
into a potentially lethal one (water AND glass). I'd stick with the rounded
pebbles, personally.
-didn't these things start out as waste from decorative glass producers? and
then they suddenly found them to be saleable too..... try glass factories,
or give the national glass centre in Sunderland a ring and have a chat, I
know they have them by the dumpy bag full, as I have seen them! but I don't
know if they would be prepared to sell you them cheap as they sell them in
their shop. They may be able to point you in the right direction however.
