Question:
I have been monitoring the postings here at
rec.crafts.beads for about a month now and have really enjoyed reading
about what everyone is doing. This is my first posting so I am dab
baling in new territory. This is all new to me.
Now that I have extra time on my hands after leaving my last job, my
wife, Susan, who owns and operates www.suncountrygems.com suggested I
get involved in the business by learning how to make jewelry, necklaces,
and other items out of beads and also learn how to make metal beads..
She would like me to start making things so we can set up a booth at
some of the bead and jewelry shows and display the items I have made
Frankly, I'm overwhelmed and really don't know where to start. Can any
of you suggest some good books or classes that would help me get
started.
Answer:
-Go here:
http://www.maychristdesigns.com/soozs_infamous_links_list.htm
It looks overwhelming, but there is a section for INSTRUCTION that will offer
you some more-specific options.
-SHE wants you to "make stuff to sell"? What about YOU? If you don't "love it",
you won't want to be doing this as a "career".
In addition to the "how to make stuff" instructions, you also might want to
read up on "how to sell what you make"-- I think there's even a book with that
title.... Or, is she suggesting that you make items for her displays, to show
examples of what can be made from her products?
Either way, lurk on alt.crafts.pro for a while and/or check their archives for
information on entering shows, types of booths & displays, etc.-- many of the
regulars are full time, professional artists, and selling at shows is their
prime source of income.
